Final preparations for another voyage of discovery!

06 August 2015

In preparation for our next adventure, we've been packing and repacking our luggage. We will be travelling for four weeks and experiencing a variety of climates and also attending a wedding.

Given these parameters, the issue of what clothes and footwear to take has been particularly taxing. The wedding clothes are likely to have one airing and then spend the remainder of the trip in the bottom of the suitcase. More of a problem are the climatic changes we may encounter. Iceland is forecast to be cool and damp, Alaska a bit warmer, but changeable and then hopefully warmer as we drive from Seattle to Minneapolis.

Documentation has been made more complicated by the decision by DVLA to get rid of the paper part of the driving licence. I've just got a 'code' for my driving record that I may need to give to the car rental company. This should allow them to check if I have points on my licence and indeed that I have a valid driving licence. I shall be intrigued to see how this works in practise. I've also been checking online with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to see if our ESTA is valid. Finally, there are e-tickets to check, car rental vouchers to pack and hotel reservations confirmed.

Then there are the electronic gadgets to charge, iPad, phone, Kindle and camera, and memory sticks and camera cards to pack. Everything has to pack into one bag weighing less than 23kg. Normally, on trans-Atlantic flight we'd be allowed two bags, but we are only permitted one bag between Anchorage and Seatle.

My last challenge has been to update my blog so I can edit it on the iPad. Assuming this post appears on the Internet, I'll have succeeded in this goal!

Look out Northern Hemisphere, here we come!
