Brentford to Heathrow!

OK, I know it isn't far, especially on the M4, but the move from the Novotel Brentford to the Holiday Inn at junction 4 of the M4 took up most of the day.

First, we had to try the pool and saunarium at the Novotel, located on the lower basement level. It was small, but well equipped with 'interesting' decor. I've never been in a pool with a mirror ceiling.

Having paid for breakfast, we then indulged ourselves at the hotel. My 'Grumpy Old Man' head was in evidence as I watched one family let its children rampage around in the dining room, jumping on and off the soft furnishing. Other families with children, were, in contrast, were sitting eating with their parents quietly. Surely, parents should show their children the behaviour suitable in hotels (and other public places), rather than sitting back, sipping coffee and taking happy-snaps of their rampaging kids. Rant ends!

I mentioned a sewing machine yesterday. Today, it was in use in our hotel room. Last minute presents were produced very deftly and look very good.

We finally checked out on the dot of midday and headed to a branch of Tesco's at Hayes to buy some fruit and wrapping paper for the aforementioned presents.

Still trying to waste time, we found a garden centre on Sipson Road, just off the M4. Here, we wandered around admiring the plants on sale. A friendly cafe was also located here along with a fresh seafood snack shack. We resisted the jellied eels and cockles and settled for a milkshake instead. I really can't remember the last time I had one.

Finally, we arrived at the Holiday Inn and after a quick check-in, headed up to our room. The room was fine, but it was sweltering. Quick, switch on the a/c! No such luck. It was broken. After calling out maintenance and several telephone calls to reception, we packed up and moved to another room. Here we found we had an upgraded room which was rather nice. The receptionist also gave us a voucher for two free drinks and 200 extra points for the hotel loyalty card. Good PR I reckon.

I managed to check-in for our flights, but was unable to print off boarding cards despite my best efforts with a wifi printer and iPad. I also discovered that Icelandair now depart from T2 rather T1. This could be a problem in the morning when are supposed to meet our 'meet 'n greet' driver at T1! More news on this tomorrow.

Before dinner, we enjoyed our complimentary beers in the bar before escaping the hotel to the pub next door. The menu here was fairly extensive, in a pubby way, but way cheaper than hotel food. On top of that, as it was hot and sunny, we were able sit outside for dinner. At an adjoining table, we had a rather party of three women from Germany and Holland clearly enjoying the local ale. I suspect there may be sore heads in the morning.

Now with bags finally packed, we are ready for our northern hemisphere trip to begin.
