A minor diversion

Today, the bags were heaved into the back of the car and we headed out of Bristol in the general direction of London.

The satnav in our latest car seems remarkably good and soon had us heading east along the M4. All was going swimmingly well until we heard there had been an accident on the east-bound M4 near Reading. Two lorries and a car no less! Sure enough, just after junction 10, we came grinding to a halt. It took the best part of an hour to reach the scene of the accident, by which time the debris had all been removed. However, due to fuel spillage, there was only one lane open. Once past it, we soon picked up speed. On the west-bound carriageway, there was a huge backlog of traffic, all due to people rubber-necking! A sad reflection really.

We found good parking at the Brentford gate of Kew Gardens and paid £15.50 each entrance, quite an expensive trip really. To be fair, the gardens were very green and pleasant and loads of people were enjoying the weather and lazing around on the grass. We had lunch at the White Tips Cafe, not a cheap experience either, but the ice-cream was very good. Well it was, until Lynn found a hair in hers!

We also visited the Dukes garden, the grass garden, the rockery and then the Princess of Wales Conservatory, a most impressive building. After that, we headed towards the old Palm house and water-lily house before heading back to the car.

It was only a short drive back to the Novotel Hotel in Brentford. We had great trouble finding our way into, the car-park though. The hotel is right next to the elevated section of the M4 but is surpringly quiet. It also has a pool and sauna in the basement.

Just to be different (actually we were being miserly), we ate at the Premier Inn next door. More importantly, we took advantage of the 'two drinks for the price of one' offer. The food was good too.

I've never been on holiday and taken a sewing machine into a hotel room before. All for a good cause I hope, when Lynn uses it tomorrow.
